The course will examine cultural exchange between Europe, the Middle East and South Asia during the late medieval and early-modern periods. The transmission of aesthetic concepts and visual traditions will be examined via specific patrons, artists, and works of art and architecture. Islamic monuments in Spain, Ottoman patronage of Italian artists, Iranian silks circulating in Europe, and Mughal interaction with Jesuit, Portuguese and English artistic traditions will be examined.
